Washington Park Conservancy marches into spring with workday, teen adventure and leadership training

On March 20, the Washington Park Conservancy organized a habitat restoration workday. Key activities included spreading seeds for native plants and removing weeds.

The Conservancy's workdays take place from 9 a.m. to noon on every third Saturday between March and October. The next workday will be held on April 17 at 9 a.m. Meet at the Washington park fieldhouse at 5531 South Martin Luther King Drive.

The Conservancy also organized a Teen Ecological Adventure with youth from Gary Comer Youth Center on March 29-31. Teens between the ages of 13 and 18 spread seeds after a prescribed burn, removed trash and went on a tree identification walk with Becky Schillo.

On April 2, the Friends of the Parks, Chicago Park District and Washington Park Conservancy hosted a leadership training session in Washington Park. Participants learned leadership skills and practical skills related to tool safety, tree mulching and workday time management. Mary Eileen Sullivan, director of Volunteers from Friends of the Parks, Jerome Scott, district forester from the Chicago Park District, Madiem Kawa, founder of the Conservancy and Treekeeper Jim from Openlands organized and trained the participants.
In spite of the event falling on Good Friday, local organizations came to learn how to lead cleanup and beautification efforts in their communities.
