Birds, Bees and Beets Lecture Updates

The lecture series kicked off the spring season with Garden Tool Sharpening and Seed Starting workshops.  After a powerpoint presentation the classes turned into a hands-on instructional networking event.  Read this wonderful write up about our seed starting lecture from a U of C Student:

Award Winning Master Gardener, Don Nekrosuis started the series with the Tool Sharpening workshop, the attendees learned how to clean and sharpen their, in some cases, antique heirloom garden tools from pruners to shovels.

Kristen McPhee, Harvest Garden Manager from the Chicago Botanic Garden shed light on starting vegetables from seed.  This participatory class really ignited extensive conversation and motivated gardeners to dig in the dirt.  The gardeners made paper pots using reused cans and pot makers then Kristen taught everyone how to make soil blocks.  The diverse group included the mature, U of C college students and people from many cultural backgrounds.  To top it off, everyone enjoyed a delicious pound cake prepared by our lecture coordinator, Madeline Moore.

Our next class is all about Backyard Beekeeping with Michael Thompson, Saturday, April 23, 2011 from 10am to Noon.
