2011 Workday Refections

The first workday of the year, March 26 was filled with energy to spring clean and green the park. A record snowy winter left us with plenty to accomplish while trash pickup and pruning shrubs kelp us busy, the tree pruning outdoor workshop by Madiem Kawa brought everyone together. Our team welcomed newcomers, Chicago Cares led by Mary who will join us every workday through October. We also enjoyed the company of high school learning service hour teens and U of C students.

We celebrated our fifth consecutive Earthday on April 16, 2011.  Fifty five volunteers mulched 40 trees and picked up trash around Dyett High School.  Inner City Outings, Chicago Cares, the Jordan family all came with children and their families to help beautify Washington Park.  The Southeast Chicago Commission graciously donated lunch.  Our collaboration with Dyett's art teacher Janine Favia to install a native art garden had awarded us a $8000 grant from the SouthEast Chicago Commission.

To participant in our workdays, just bring yourself and a friend every third Saturday from 9 to Noon, we meet at the Fountain of Time on the far south/east end of the park. Meet at the field house (5531 s kind drive) for Earth Day.  No close bathrooms in the natural areas, the outhouse are not always open.
