Bronzeville Community Garden

Bronzeville Community Garden located at the southeast corner of 51st and Calumet celebrated its grand
opening with approximately 150 friends and neighbors on Thursday, August 19, 2010. Throughout the
evening the garden was filled with visitors enjoying the fruits of many months of planning and planting.
The patio, butterfly sanctuary, and of course the 12 beds of vegetables, herbs, plants and flowers were
center stage. The garden team hosted an event filled with games, African drummers, spoken word
performances, face painting and delicious food.

September in the garden began with preparations for fall. Our organized volunteer day was nearly
rained out but headway was made in anchoring stoops and stumps for checkers, dominoes and
chess. A wooden hopscotch path was also installed to the delight of many neighbors. The garden has
an established group of regulars since the opening celebration and the Salvation Army has recently
designated the garden a permanent daily meal distribution location.

Aside from ongoing projects such as the shed and watering system and the fast approaching harvest
season, Bronzeville Community Garden is up for Mayor Daley’s Greenworks Awards in the category of
Community Leadership. Wish us luck! Anyone needing more information or interested in volunteering
